Gabriel Martins was the I Batukinha! drum contest winner, in 2003. In 2009 he
performed at the oppening of 10th Batuka! Masters - National Drummers Contest.
"To win the Batukinha! was a great experience in my life once, by various
reasons, winning was not in my mind. The Batukinha! was for me, also a great
incentive once I met people I never thought I would."
Born in Santos,
São Paulo state in the year 1992, Gabriel Martins is a self-taught drummer who
fell in Love with the drum set at the age four while listening to his church´s
music. From then on, started to use pans as his main instrument until ten years
old when he acquired his first set.
In the year 2003, Gabriel amazed the audience at the Batuka! while playing as
one of the finalists of the Batukinha! , the festival´s category aimed for
drummers up to 13 years old. At only 11 he was appointed the winner by unanimity
by a jury of world famous drummers such as: Dom Famularo, Charles Gavin, Jim
Chapin, Julio Figueiroa, Sam Aliano and Aquiles Priester.
Dom Famularo on Gabriel: “I had participated in festivals all around the world
but the Batuka! in Brazil was the most memorable of them all. The moment I saw
Gabriel´s performance, I heard the mother nature speaking through the drums.
Gabriel played in a very natural way and with all of his heart. All of the
contestants impressed me but with Gabriel it was special; he had something else!”
Since then Gabriel had studied drums at the IBVF having Vera Figueiredo as his
mentor. Charles Gavin and Lara Campos, both drummers also collaborate on the
studies of this incontestable talent who since the beginning achieved lots of
Gabriel aspires to travel the world with lots of artists as a session drummer, a
perfectly feasible desire once he is such an unquestionable talent.
